Cause-Why does this happen?
For many years, violence against women in India has been known to be one of the biggest issues in the South Asian region. One factor that influenced this includes the imbalance of power between the role of a man versus a woman. In a majority of cultures, men were/are seen as the dominant gender, omitting the few rights women actually have. In India, the treatment towards women is unlike any other. Within three generations, approximately 50 million women have been targeted and killed, all directly related to abuse. In a recent book entitled India Dishonoured: Behind a Nation’s War on Women, Author, Sunny Hundal, emphasizes the point in which the changing eras could be a potential factor in the issue regarding violence against women. Due to the adapted social norms regarding the treatment of women, women in India are expected to play their traditional role as an obedient woman in their environment. However, times are changing and as women stray from their expected role, they are seen as disrespectful and bring shame among their families, which is punishable through violent tactics.
The number and support of protests and demonstrations to fight for women's rights have increased drastically within the last few years.

Many articles also suggest that the media in India, such as the “Bollywood” cinema, is a leading factor regarding the way women should be/are perceived. “Sex, in particular, is a topic whose cultural presence is marked by disturbing contradictions” (TheInternational). Among the numerous deaths involving women, officials say that “rape cases in India has increased by almost 900 percent over the past 40 years” . Many of these cases reveal that not only are the attackers strangers to the victim, but they can just as well be someone as close to them as their neighbor and or family member… However, with a combination of judicial law efforts having to do with education, health, laws and infrastructure can significantly reduce violence. Simultaneously, the people of India in general have to develop a better mindset for the female population. It will take a lot more than a change of laws to overcome the mentality of such a misogynistic society.
